The Day of the Dead Altars

May 21, 2023

If you stay in our luxurious vacation rentals in the Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta during the last weekend of October, you will be in the perfect place to participate in one of Mexico’s most special traditions: the Day of the Dead.

Unlike Halloween, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1 and 2 and is a combination of ancient Mesoamerican and Spanish traditions to commemorate deceased loved ones. However, far from being a somber moment, it is a celebration of life with music, dance, food, and drink.

Mexicans create altars dedicated to their loved ones, decorating them with offerings to ease their journey to the afterlife. Elements such as water, representing thirst; candles, symbolizing fire; colorful paper banners, evoking the wind; and food, like the traditional pan de muerto decorated with sugared fruits, representing the earth, are placed. Additionally, marigolds, butterflies, sugar skulls, and toys are often added in tribute to deceased children.

If you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta during the Day of the Dead, we recommend visiting Plaza Las Armas, next to the famous Malecón, to admire these beautiful altars and immerse yourself in this wonderful tradition.
