The Complete Guide to Tasting Tequila in Puerto Vallarta

May 16, 2023

No visit to Puerto Vallarta is complete without a taste of Tequila, the iconic national spirit of Mexico produced exclusively in our home state of Jalisco. In this charming city, you will find tequila shops on every corner, many of which are within walking distance of the luxurious vacation rentals in the old town of Puerto Vallarta, such as Pinnacle Resorts. Additionally, tequila is a constant presence in local bars and restaurants. But how do you choose the right tequila and how do you enjoy it properly? Here is a quick guide from Pinnacle Tequila to start your adventure.

Tequila is exclusively made from the blue agave plant and comes in five different types:

  • Blanco or Silver Tequila: ideal for cocktails like margaritas or palomas, this unaged tequila stands out for its versatility. Although it usually does not undergo an aging process, there are distilleries that produce excellent blanco tequilas that are best enjoyed on their own. The difference is usually noticeable in the price.
  • Joven or Gold Tequila: this is an unaged version (blanco) that has been modified with additional ingredients, such as caramel colorants, to simulate an aged tequila. While perfect for margaritas, you should be careful, as the extra sugar in the colorant can lead to a strong hangover.
  • Reposado Tequila: this aged tequila has rested in oak barrels for at least two months and up to a year. During this aging process, flavors and nuances are enhanced, making reposados a popular choice among tequila lovers.
  • Añejo Tequila: reserved for true connoisseurs, this extra aged tequila is stored in sealed oak barrels for a minimum of one year, in batches no larger than 600 liters per barrel according to the law. It is recommended to taste it in a brandy glass to appreciate its complex flavor profile.
  • Extra Añejo Tequila: a category of tequila formalized in 2006, which requires an aging time of more than 3 years. With intense and deep flavors, these tequilas often have a high price tag in line with their quality. Some distilleries also offer a “house reserve,” a limited edition bottled by hand, as well as tequilas with softer and more delicious flavors and tequila creams.
