During your stay in our luxury vacation rentals in the Puerto Vallarta Romantic Zone, you will have the perfect opportunity to take part in one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions: Dia de Muertos.
Distinct from Halloween, Dia de Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, blending ancient Mesoamerican and Spanish customs to honor the memory of the departed. This celebration is far from somber; it is a joyous occasion to commemorate the lives of loved ones with music, dance, and delicious food and drinks.
Mexican families create altars dedicated to their deceased relatives, adorned with offerings to comfort their spirits in the afterlife. These offerings are based on the four elements: water, wind, earth, and fire. Water or a favorite drink is left out to quench the spirits’ thirst, while colorful paper banners symbolize the wind and candles guide the way for the deceased. Earth is represented by food, such as the traditional pan de muerto, a sweet bread adorned with sugared fruit. Marigolds and butterflies adorn the altars to guide the spirits, and sugar skulls and toys are often placed on altars for children who have passed away.
If you find yourself in Puerto Vallarta during Dia de Muertos, make sure to visit Plaza Las Armas near the famous Malecón to witness these beautiful altars and partake in this captivating tradition.
