Sergio Bustamante: The Surrealist Side of Mexican Art

February 22, 2023

Sergio Bustamante is one of Mexico’s most renowned surrealist artists. His sculptures and jewelry collections, originating from his main gallery in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, are shipped to buyers worldwide. This city is located approximately 4.5 hours by car from Puerto Vallarta.

Origins and Inspiration

Originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Sergio Bustamante was raised by his grandfather, José Chong, a Chinese immigrant who became a lifelong source of inspiration. At the age of nine, he moved to Guadalajara, where, motivated by his love for painting and architecture, he began studying the latter discipline. However, he soon realized that fine arts were his true passion. At just 17 years old, he presented his first public exhibition.

Later, he moved to Amsterdam to continue his artistic training. For two years, he honed his craft in the Dutch city before returning to Mexico to solidify his career.

“In Search of Reason”: An Iconic Work

Bronze sculpture is the medium for which Sergio Bustamante is best known. His most iconic work, In Search of Reason, is located on the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta, a landmark seaside promenade that showcases an impressive collection of public art.

Unveiled in 1999, this sculpture is one of the most photographed on the Malecón. It consists of a large bronze staircase approximately 18 meters high, sturdy enough for visitors to climb and take pictures. The work depicts two children ascending while their mother pleads for them to come down safely.

Sergio Bustamante has stated that this sculpture is inspired by “freedom,” though, like all his work, its interpretation is left to the viewer’s imagination.
