No trip to Puerto Vallarta is complete without a visit to the iconic Malecon, a picturesque oceanside walkway that stretches from Cinco de Diciembre to the Romantic Zone, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. This mile-long promenade is a favorite spot for tourists to capture vacation memories, with photo opportunities in front of the colorful Puerto Vallarta sign and the impressive Los Arcos Amphitheatre. What truly sets the Malecon apart are the bronze sculptures that line its length, created by some of Mexico’s most renowned artists.
Among the notable pieces are “Origin & Destiny” by Pedro Tello, “Nostalgia” by Jose Ramiz Barquet, “Nature as Mother” by Adrián Reynoso, “The Subtle Rock Eater” by Jonás Gutiérrez, “The Good Fortune Unicorn” by Aníbal Riebeling, and “Triton and Mermaid” by Carlos Espino. These captivating sculptures can be easily explored with the help of two free walking tours offered weekly during the high season.
From November to April, visitors can choose between a Tuesday morning tour starting at 9:30am or a Thursday sunset tour starting at 6:00pm, both led by Gary Thompson, the owner of Galeria Pacifico and a resident of Vallarta for over 38 years. The morning tour sets off from the Millennium sculpture near Hotel Rosita, while the sunset tour departs from Galeria Pacifico on Aldama Street. While the tours are complimentary, guests are encouraged to make a donation to support Biblioteca Los Mangos, Puerto Vallarta’s public library and cultural center, which relies on private donations for its operations.
