THE HISTORY OF BEER IN MEXICO

By

Its common knowledge: in Mexico – you drink beer. Although, what many people don’t know is that Mexico is actually the world leader in beer production, and manages one of the most extensive and sophisticated retail distribution networks in the world to make sure the beer makes it to its destination.

Mexico has been producing fermented alcoholic beverages even before the Europeans arrived. During Aztec times, the Maguey plant was fermented to produce a potent mixture called Pulque which is still consumed in Mexico to this day.

Once the Europeans arrived, Mexico was introduced beer made from grains such as barley and wheat. After Mexico’s Independence, beer production skyrocketed; particularly around the era of prohibition which made the trade of beer and other alcoholic beverages really popular along border towns.

Today, two major corporations manage 90% of beer production in Mexico: Cerveceria Modelo and Cerveceria Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma. These two groups are responsible for the production of famous beers such as Corona, Pacifico, Modelo, Tecate, Indio, and many more Mexican favorites that you can find right here in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone.

But don’t forget about the local breweries! Los Muertos Brewing is a few blocks from your Romantic Zone luxury accommodation, and a spot called La Union on the malecon has an incredible selection of Mexican craft beers.

We strongly recommend you get out there and try some of the delicious beer we in Mexico have to offer while you enjoy your luxury accommodation in Puerto Vallarta. There’s nothing like enjoying an ice-cold beer while spending some much needed vacation time in the sunshine.
