A Michelada is made with beer as the base and can be made for all different tastes using light beer or dark beer (although dark beer is more common) and always the essential ingredients of lime juice, a little chile, and some seasoned salt. But from there, a Michelada can be custom-made depending on your request or the specialty of the house. Some bartenders add tomato juice, others use Clamato. Some will add a special touch with a splash of Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, or even teriyaki sauce. A stalk of celery, cucumber, or lime wedge is a common garnish and beach bars often add a large shrimp on the side of the glass – or sometimes several shrimp on a skewer making your Michelada more like a meal than a drink.
