GETTING SAFE SUN ON YOUR VACATION

By

Warm summer days in Puerto Vallarta have everyone reaching for their sunscreen, but are you really doing everything you need to protect your skin from a painful sunburn?  We have some summer sunscreen tips to make sure that you enjoy your vacation in Puerto Vallarta without worry:

1)       Go through your sunscreen collection, toss old or expired bottles and buy new products.

2)      Look for a waterproof sunblock if you plan on being in the water or if you sweat a lot. It takes about 80 minutes for a waterproof sunblock to wash off, so using one will help ensure that you have protection from the sun even when you are swimming or working out outside.

3)      Find a sunblock that is labeled “broad spectrum,” which means that it protects from both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause wrinkling and aging of the skin, while UVB rays cause sunburn, but both UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer. It is best to be protected from both, however, sunblock that is not broad spectrum will only protect against UVB rays.

4)      Choose the sun protection factor (SPF) that works best for you.  The level of protection is primarily determined by SPF number. The higher the SPF the longer you will be protected from UVB rays before your skin becomes red and starts to burn. It is recommended that you choose a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30.
